As we move into Fall, it sure has been a crazy Summer! I was incredibly fortunate to work on a lot of big projects this summer. In fact, driving through my neighborhood, there are 2 giant billboards for films I orchestrated.
I am most excited about "The Book of Life," produced by Guillermo del Toro. This is my first major film as lead orchestrator. It was an extreme pleasure working with Academy Award winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla. Leading the charge was score arranger, Tim Davies. He did a fantastic job with Gustavo's original music. This film comes out for Halloween, and I personally can't wait to see the finished product. If you can't tell by the poster above, this is an amazing looking movie.
I had mentioned "A Walk Among the Tombstones" in an earlier post. It is finally hitting theaters, starring Liam Neeson. This was a particularaly fun gig because the composer, Carlos Rafael Rivera, is on faculty at the Univ. of Miami, my alma mater. He composed a fantastic score for this film, and I look forward to seeing his future work. Tim Davies and I split the orchestration work on this film, and he did a great job as always.
This year was the 25th anniversary of The Simpsons. Hard to believe! In celebration, an enormous concert was put together at the Hollywood Bowl. Along with Tim Davies, I was tasked with adapting and re-orchestrating the original music for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Most of it came from the original series, by Alf Clauson. There were also featured scenes from the Simpsons Movie, by Hans Zimmer. Jim Dooley did a great job with new arrangements and coordinating all the last minute changes. It was a real honor being involved on this gig. I've been watching The Simpsons from day one on the Tracy Ullman Show. I watched it non-stop throughout college in the dorms. Alf Clauson invited me to one of my first sessions when I moved to LA eight years ago. It was a real honor being included to help pull this show off.
Lastly, I just started work on the new season of Revenge, on ABC. Tim Davies and I will be doing the orchestrations for composer Fil Eisler (also known as iZLER). Make sure you listen for Amy Tatum's bass flute solos! Great stuff all around on this score.
Besides the above gigs, I also orchestrated the trailer for Into the Woods, helped put together the music for Elvis Costello's Hollywood Bowl concert, did some minor work on Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and even played trombone a couple of times! So far, 2014 has been a terrific year. Looking forward to whatever the future may bring.
